Glaucoma Surgery
Service Description
Glaucoma is a chronic eye condition that damages the optic nerve, most commonly due to raised eye pressure. Treatment aims to lower eye pressure in order to slow or prevent further vision loss. Management is individualised and may include eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery. -Eye drops are often the first step in treatment. They work by reducing fluid production within the eye or improving its drainage and are usually used long term to maintain safe eye pressure. -Laser treatment may be recommended when drops are insufficient or not well tolerated. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) enhances the eye’s natural drainage system and can reduce or delay the need for drops. Transscleral cyclodiode laser lowers eye pressure by reducing fluid production and may be used in selected cases. Surgical options are considered when further pressure reduction is required. Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) procedures, such as iStent, Hydrus, and OMNI, aim to improve fluid outflow with a favourable safety profile and quicker recovery, often performed alongside cataract surgery. Trabeculectomy and the PreserFlo MicroShunt create new drainage pathways to achieve sustained pressure reduction. Glaucoma drainage devices, including the Paul tube, Ahmed valve, and Baerveldt implant, are established surgical options used to control eye pressure by diverting fluid through a small implanted device. The most appropriate treatment is carefully discussed based on glaucoma type, disease stage, eye health, and individual visual needs.
